I experienced socially responsible tourism for the first time as an undergrad student in 2004 – and fell in love with the idea of traveling with a purpose; learning about a community from within the community; and supporting the work of local organizations that are meeting the community’s needs. I spent 6 years planning these trips for my fellow college students, and worked with a national nonprofit after college to plan these trips for college students around America.
When I began teaching yoga in 2010, I had a dream of combining my passions and creating experiences for people to travel together, serve together, experience community together and practice yoga along the way. In 2017 that became a reality with my first Yoga + Service trip to Antigua, Guatemala and then to Kenya in February 2019 and India in February 2020. The incredible experiences that our team had on these trips inspired me to continue offering these trips. In 2021 we will be heading back to Kenya to immerse ourselves in some of my favorite communities, cultural experiences and organizations. All trips are planned in partnership with The Village Experience. More info below.
Kenya Yoga + Community Immersion
Main Trip | September 15-26, 2021
Post-Trip Safari | September 26-30, 2021
Join us in Kenya for 11 nights, 12 days (with the option of extending your trip) of safari, community immersions, culture, both mainland and island experiences, sunset sails, beach time, incredible swahili food, and yoga. We will be volunteering and learning from local organizations in both Mbita and in island villages off the coast of Kenya, experiencing the work they are doing in their communities around education, women’s empowerment, and access to healthcare. On our days off you get to experience a safari at Lake Nakuru, explore Lake Victoria, relax on the island of Lamu, sail on traditional dhows and relax on the beach or by your pool.
We hope you’ll join us for this once in a lifetime experience. More details can be found below and at the links provided. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to email Mikki.
Community Immersions + Fundraising
The Village Experience will be coordinating four days of community immersions for us with their agency partners. In Mbita, we will be working with Live Long Self Help Women’s Group and Mbita Primary School, while off the coast of Kenya, we will be working with Safari Doctors, Shamba la Shela School and Shela Women’s Association. Our group will collectively choose a project to fundraise for that benefits these organizations and will give our time and energy while visiting these communities to implement these projects. We are asking that as part of your commitment to this trip, you are prepared to raise at least $500 in donations for this project. You can make the donation yourself, you can host fundraisers, you can ask your friends and family for support, or work with Mikki and Kelly to come up with other ideas.
Most day of the retreat will begin or end (depending on our schedule) with a yoga practice, led by Mikki. These practices will be all levels, yoga classes and will help us to integrate and process our experiences on this immersion. You can learn more about Mikki and her teaching style here.
Our retreat has time built in for you to have unplanned, free time to explore Kenya. We have one full day of safari at Lake Nakuru, a morrning in Nairobi to visit Black Lives Matter murals and visit the Giraffe Conservation Center in Nairobi, a couple full days to relax and explore Lamu, and specifically Shela Village. There will be plenty of opportunities to appreciate the local cuisine and shop from local artisans. And your time spent on traditional dhows for a sunset sail will be an unforgettable part of your experience.
And if you’re interested in more time spent on Safari, we have a post-trip extension with the best Safari guide, Danson, that will give you a few extra days in and around Samburu National Park.
Our Yoga + Community Immersions are planned and managed by the wonderful team at The Village Experience. Head over to their page by clicking the button below for more details, cost, and full itinerary!
