Guatemala Yoga + Service Retreat

November 10-17, 2018

Main Yoga + Service Retreat: November 10-November 17
Post Trip Lake Atitlan Extension: November 17-November 19

Retreat Overview
Join us in Antigua, Guatemala for a week of history, amazing food, incredible views (including an active volcano), and service in remote villages outside of Antigua. On service days, we hop into pick up trucks and head off into the jungle to the villages of Ceylan, ChuChu, Osuna, Zapote and Lucernas to get our hands dirty helping with critical projects (in 2017 we laid cement floors in family homes) and to distribute food to the villages’ elderly members. On our days off and evenings, we explore Antigua, which is a UNESCO World Heritage City, with so much to experience and explore in terms of architecture, history, shopping and food.

We hope you’ll join us for this once in a lifetime experience. More details can be found below and at the links provided. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to email Mikki. Or join us on Saturday, March 17th at 10am at Indigo Yoga Studio in Salem, Oregon for an info session on this retreat with myself and Zohra.

The Village Experience will be coordinating three days of service for us with their agency partners in surrounding villages – Ceylan, ChuChu, Osuna, Zapote, Lucernas and San Miguel Duenas. Our exact projects will be dependent on current needs and what our group chooses to fundraise for. In 2017, we laid cement floors in homes for families living with dirt floors to help with sanitation and quality of life. Whatever the project ends up being, expect to roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty. We also will be supporting a food distribution program for the villages’ elderly citizens – a project that became very near and dear to our hearts during our last visit. Most of our work will be with two primary agencies: Vamos Adelante and Open Windows Foundation. Part of our service experience will be simply meeting members of these village communities, visiting their homes, sharing meals, and connecting.

Each day of the retreat will begin or end (depending on our schedule) with a yoga practice, led by either Mikki or Zohra. These practices will be all levels, yoga classes and will help us to integrate and process our experiences on this retreat. Here’s a little bit more about Mikki and Zohra:

Mikki Trowbridge
An Oregon yoga and SUP yoga teacher and creator of Yoga + Beer pairings, Mikki Trowbridge aspires to both inform and inspire through her teachings. She is known for her anatomically informed and soulfully inspired yoga classes that promise to be a little nerdy, but always fun, flowing and accompanied by phenomenal playlists. Her style creates space for yogis to be challenged and to grow their practice, but also to find ease, confidence, laughter and yogi friends. In addition to teaching yoga, Mikki also enjoys volunteering and inspiring others to find their passion for service, traveling, sipping on craft beers and getting outdoors for a hike, a paddle or to catch a sunset.

Zohra Campbell, DC
Zohra is passionate about helping and encouraging people to unwind and alleviate tight, painful, and congested areas in their bodies. Drawing on her yoga training in styles from Iyengar, Anusara, and Forrest yoga, with her strong focus on anatomy, clinical chiropractic experience, and spinal rehabilitation make the benefits of yoga accessible to every student. Working with Zohra, either in a yoga session or as a client, will help you overcome restrictions in your physical body- fascia, posture, muscular imbalances and in your mind- your thoughts, your habits. Through a career of teaching yoga and doing body work for more than 20 years, Zohra feels more excited every day about helping people find and release the patterns and fears that hold them back-whether physical or emotional.

Our retreat has time built in for you to have unplanned, free time to explore Antigua. We have three full days that are meant for exploring the UNESCO World Heritage City of Antigua, with its beautiful cobblestone streets, ancient ruins, local churches and skyline of volcanoes. We will have opportunities to learn about the importance of the cocoa industry in the region and visit a coffee plantation. There will be plenty of opportunities to appreciate the local cuisine and shop from local artisans. And of course – we found the local brewery, and will be paying Antigua Brewing Company a visit.

Interested in visiting Lake Atitlan? We have an extension option for two additional nights after our main trip ends, to head out to Lake Atitlan.
